I work as a security analyst. I'm from Australia, although I've recently immigrated to the US and hope to start a small business offering security services.
I have a strong interest and knowledge in different access control models, reading about new exploits and vulnerabilities and digital forensics.

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? I will end up accepting your answer, although I would request that you elaborate on the extent to which a paraphilia is a mental disorder, if you are able? Sexual orientations are not mental disorders, so I think it is relevant. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? Yes, I agree with that. The problem I had is when you were saying that pedophilia is a criminal offence. Having that attraction should not be an offense, especially if such people can't help it. Molesting is a different story altogether. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? I do not have a predetermined POV, I certainly lean towards it being a sexual orientation, but am interested in what the facts show. You are very much incorrect that pedophilia is a criminal offense. That is not up for debate. Child Molestation is a criminal offense. Pedophilia is either a mental disorder or a sexual orientation, neither of which can be a criminal offense. I do appreciate you expanding your answer, but unless you understand the difference between pedophilia and child molestation, there is no way I could ever accept your answer as correct. |

Why is a lack of response to punishment in adults considered significant in diagnoses? @Speldosa If you search the word punishment on that wiki page similar claims are found. Also see this page which states that psychopaths don't respond to punishment, which to me seems to be a defining trait. I would rather not make the question specific to psychopathy however. Would you say measuring response to punishment is not used in diagnoses at all? |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? @OfriRaviv I feel that I've laid this out quite clearly in this and the other question dedicated to this topic. A paraphilia has symptoms (for lack of a better word) such as intense recurring dreams that are not typically associated with a more common orientation. If you disagree then please give an answer, as at the moment I feel like you are just playing with semantics. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? @OfriRaviv, I guess I didn't make my point clear. The only symptom of being heterosexual is a sexual attraction to members of the opposite sex. Is the only symptom of pedophilia a sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children, or are there are additional symptoms which are also generally ascribed to mental disorders? If you say it is only a matter of terminology perhaps you could support that and provide it as a answer. |

Do paraphilias have symptoms other than a sexual attraction? @Speldosa Because there is contradictory information and it isn't clear. For example, pedophilia is considered a paraphilia and a mental disorder. When I questioned if pedophilia is a mental disorder some people gave the answer that it is purely a matter of definitions. At the same time other people say that is is more than a matter of definitions and that paraphilias have symptoms defining them as such. Which is it? |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? @OfriRaviv So then a mental disorder is simply a matter of terminology for atypical behaviour, not backed up by physical, psychological or neurological symptoms? Perhaps you could answer my question here? |

Why is a lack of response to punishment in adults considered significant in diagnoses? @Speldosa I was wrong, that point actually isn't on the HPC. I have added a reference that I hope is a good example of what I am questioning. |

Why is a lack of response to punishment in adults considered significant in diagnoses? @Speldosa, I don't have any references to provide as I am questioning the effectiveness of punishment and asking why it is considered effective. Do you have any references to support your piano answer, as that could make a great answer. To clarify my question, a counter-example might be an innocent man continually being whipped, which he considered unjust and so does not alter his behaviour. If someone doesn't agree with the punishment won't many people just take it, unless the punishment is quite high? |

Do paraphilias have symptoms other than a sexual attraction? @Speldosa I'm wanting to confirm that, with references if possible. I've noticed some people seem to consider a paraphilia an atypical attraction and nothing more. It is my understanding that there is more to it. This question was born out of my question on pedophilia and the comments in the first answer. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? As for paraphilias, I'm just going by what I find online and I don't work/study in this field, so may well be wrong. What I have found seems to indicate that paraphilias are not similar to a sexual orientation because for example they are related to a traumatic event and develop in childhood, or that they are related to recurring and intense fantasies. In short that they are not innate and can be treated, while an orientation, at least in one sense, is innate (I did read the APA site) and cannot be treated. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? Pedophilia should never be considered a criminal offense and is only considered so now by laymen. A pedophile is not synonymous with a child molester. Indeed I recall studies showing for a given sample most child molesters were not pedophiles. If pedophilia is a sexual attraction in the same way homo/heterosexuality is then why should a pedophile who fights against their attraction be a criminal? |

Why is a lack of response to punishment in adults considered significant in diagnoses? @ArtemKaznatcheev How is it not? How is abnormal psychology relevant? I am asking why a lack of response to punishment is considered significant. It seems to be the norm/baseline that people will respond to punishment, so abnormal psychology doesn't make sense to me. Going by the tag description for cognitive psychology, it seems fitting. Why do you disagree? |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? On The APA site regarding homosexuality it states The experts found that homosexuality does not meet the criteria to be considered a mental illness. which implies to me that there must be more to a paraphilia than just attraction. The wiki page on paraphilia seems to support that this is the view held at the moment, with there being different causes and symptoms. What I want to know is if there is any support that pedophilia is any different from homo/heterosexuality or if it is "more" than an orientation. I hope that makes sense |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? Hi Catharsis, Thanks for your answer. Just a question here, but is paraphilia not somewhat distinct from a sexual orientation, in that there is a lot more associated with the term aside from just sexual attraction? It is my understanding that paraphilias are generally developed in early childhood and have more "symptoms". Is this correct? |

Why is a lack of response to punishment in adults considered significant in diagnoses? @ArtemKaznatcheev I am asking about punishment and the normal response, and why a deviation is considered significant. Why punishment is used at all for measuring or diagnosing. Asking why it is significant covers all of those question without being too general. I don't see something that applies to everybody being abnormal psychology. What I am asking certainly comes under psychology. I don't know how to make the question clearer and don't understand the downvote. |

Is pedophilia a sexual orientation or a mental disorder? @Artem I'm sorry, where on Quinsey's homepage is evidence that pedophilia is closer to a sexual orientation than a mental disorder? The Google search you link to also does not return relevant papers. If you think there is a paper that is relevant, please link it. I have done research and have not found much, hence the question. |
