Have you also considered rotation? That would make this much easier and also add a parameter that has well-defined limits (e.g., 0 degrees - 360 degrees).

Ouch, let's not go down the route of parallel/serial search - that debate certainly didn't begin or end with that 1985 paper, and is continuing to this day. The only issue I would raise is that the literature has moved on considerably from then so it may be a bit misleading to point to it as a starter.
