Major overhaul to emphasize the part I think is cohesive and on-topic. Feel free to change the direction of the question if you don't want to focus on this, but I think this is a good question and sufficiently focused without the other parts. The mechanisms of stimulus interpretation would be interesting to explore as well, but please describe a specific stimulus if you want to focus on that.
