Is variation in human brain size related to mental functioning? I'll repeat my comment from below, a layman's translation of this question is whether hat size correlates to IQ. The predictive power of hat size can be rounded down to 0. In comparison to other factors (socio-economic, schooling, or what century you were born in) this answer is fodder for pop-psych non-sense. |

Is variation in human brain size related to mental functioning? BS: computational theory is one of my core disciplines. That we can get a monkey to outperform on some specific tests does not generalize to human g measurement. Hell, it's hard to get consistent results with just humans (I have ceiling-ed IQ subtests on accident and I had to correct the administrator). If you want to go there, explain crows, elephants, etc: their brain sizes are WAY different! A layman translation of all this boils down to correlating IQ with hat size. The predictive power of hat size can be rounded down to 0- which sucks because I have a big head : ( |

Is StackExchange.com Addiction Dangerous? I think this needs to be reformulated to general internet addiction or closed as non-productive. |

Are there axioms in the mind? This is like asking if all matter is infinity divisible or not. That's a philosophy of science question that requires defining infinite and atomic. It's not a question that a Q&A site is meant to answer! |

Hebbian Learning Rule, Local or Global? Your answer indicates that the "rule" only affects local neurons but the rule/theory applies more broadly than just local neurons. Indeed, it wouldn't be of much use at all if it weren't for chaining these neurons together into larger networks. |

What explains habitual or even occasional incidences of self-talk? I would think that this is just a generalized form of internal dialogue. Don't you debate with yourself on what kind of breakfast you would want in the morning? I mean, this kind of back and forth is how you make any basic pro-con list. |

Hebbian Learning Rule, Local or Global? While it's true that neurons only connect to adjacent neurons, the networks that form between them are the result of hebb's rule. We start out with an over-abundance of neuronal connections and the networks that don't get used (redundant ones) are systematically get killed off. Hebb's theory is critical in understanding neural networks. |

Does associating a color with numbers improve math learning? I know that synesthesiacs perform worse in math, but I'm too lazy to look up the research. |

Is it possible to improve reading speed and visual comprehension by doing exercises? I think we are getting off topic here. The main problem is that hinoglu title and body are nonsequitur because he doesn't understand the cognitive processes involved: the entire question needs to be reformatted. Obviously, my RSVP suggestion is inadequate. Whatever "techniques" we want to discuss, they should be prefaced with a general "not exactly" disclaimer and then discuss how much can be improved and with what effort. Maybe a post per technique, then people can battle it out in the comments and with votes. |

Is it possible to improve reading speed and visual comprehension by doing exercises? hinoglu: What you need to understand is that while reading does in involve visual processing, visual processing has very little to do with understanding what the text means. When you read the word "elephant", you don't keep a mental image of the word in your head, you think of an elephant! I remember stumbling over a study showing no increase in speed using cell-phone implementation. Its likely that using RSVP where one would naturally skim (like a web-page) is counter productive. |
