comment How long does a spiking signal last?
Thanks for the answer and the pointers. How can the narrow integration window for octopus cells be explained? By a low spiking threshold? A weak insulation such that the accumulated potentials quickly dissipate?

comment How far can a signal travel in the neocortex without passing through the white matter?
I agree with @borilla, that the second paragraph is not so clear. You wrote that there are feedforward and feedback connections between layer I of one region and layer IV of another region, but then you wrote that layer IV has no backward connections, which seems contradictory.

comment Where can I find good references about the neuronal connections in various areas in the cortex?
Thanks. What I'm wondering about is this: In Ramnani & Owen (2004) and Petrides & Pandya (2007) they note that BA 10 is very isolated from the sensory processing in the cortex, so it is conjectured that it is concerned with integrating result from other areas at a very high level. Yet, BA10 has a thin layer IV which is usually connected to the thalamus in other cortical areas. Hence, I'm wondering what it is connected to, if not to sensory circuitry.

Thanks for the hint. I've skimmed a copy of it but I couldn't find what I am looking for since it is too specific. Just to get an idea of the state of art, is it at all possible to trace the connections to BA 10, layer IV via dissections or scanning methods?

comment What is the name of the bias when one expects you to possess his knowledge?
Inferential distance is also a useful concept closely related to this.

Short answer: "Some things cannot be learned without a bias.", for longer answers see: stackoverflow.com/questions/2480650/…

Gosh, why didn't they teach this carry trick in school? Are people insane?

The Polymath project (a massive collaboration of mathematicians) might be an interesting subject of study: m.youtube.com/watch?v=elWIDVI6b18
