Hmm, this seems to be specific to spectator sports...

I intuitively think you're right, but have there been actual studies to support this idea of taking fun breaks?

comment Do laypeople think lifestyle changes are effective at preventing and treating disease?
What I meant was: I'd like to know if a possible barrier to people's using lifestyle changes is that they don't believe lifestyle changes to be effective. Does that help?

Good suggestions; thanks. I'm a bit afraid of averaging Likert responses either to create a composite rating or in aggregate statistical analysis: is it really OK to treat Likert data as interval rather than ordinal? I see this practice a lot, but am not sure if there's been empirical justification. Regarding changing the response scale, are there any disadvantages to adding more scale points? Is there a "magic number" over which you start to lose reliability?

@Jens, sorry, not quite sure I understand the question. Internally, I code the six values of the Likert scale as 1-6, with 1 corresponding to "Very ineffective," 2 corresponding to "Ineffective," etc. I have a few different items (questions), each requiring an estimate of effectiveness on the above Likert scale. Does that answer your question?
