Are brains reconstructing the information that come into the modalities?

For example if I see a chair, has my visual cortex built a chair and placed it where the lower layers reported the parts of the chair? Likewise, if I try to imagine a chair, do I actually "see" the chair?

Edit I found a good book but im welcome for further advices of book, links, papers, etc.

By "lower layers", do you mean earlier stages of visual processing like the lateral geniculate nucleus, optic nerve, or retina? The fact that we can distinguish the contents of our visuospatial sketchpads (i.e., working memory) from visual reality suggests other important differences in response to your last question. –  Nick Stauner Jul 7 '14 at 22:05
@NickStauner yes, inclusive v1, v2 etc., can you suggest any good paper or books about the visual working memory and the interaction between the visual stages/systems etc? I know this sounds too much like computer science and the systems (v1, v2, etc) are tightly coupled but it helps to get the basic princicples at work –  Quonux Jul 8 '14 at 11:40
It's not a problem if it sounds a bit like computer science (I've seen much "worse" here in that regard). I'm afraid I'm beyond my experience here; was just hoping to clarify things for anyone who wouldn't be.
